Reveries began as a set of three songs for baritone and piano, with text by three different poets. In this new version for cello and piano, the lyrical lines are sung by the cello, while the piano lends rhythm and harmonic structure, as well as emotional content. The first two songs are slow and thoughtful, dark, but with climactic moments of grandeur, whereas the last song is fast and celebratory. Throughout the work, the cello primarily explores its expressive middle register, singing its melodies alternately with tenderness and with fire.
