My second saxophone concerto was written for Joe Eckert, alto saxophone, and the TCU Wind Symphony with Bobby Francis. The title of the work, ‘Icon’, refers to two distinct characters. The first is a fictional ship’s captain, Jack Aubrey, who dashes his way through twenty historical seafaring novels by Patrick O’Brien. Aubrey is brilliant, brash, and lucky in battle, and yet this larger-than-life character is also, at times, thoughtful and even musical. The music in the ‘Icon’ concerto does not tell a story, but rather serves to embody the many facets of Aubrey’s personality. The other iconic figure I had in mind while writing this piece is my father, Henning L. Meyn, whom I have always looked up to; this concerto is dedicated to him.
